Gruffalo Sculptures at Wendover Woods
If you venture into the deep dark wood you may bump into the Gruffalo.
Each wooden sculpture has been carved in a different position – can you find them all across the nation’s forests?
Why not try your hand at orienteering, a map reading challenge for all levels?
The aim for everyone is to navigate between control points marked on an orienteering map. If you are a little more competitive the challenge is to complete the course in the quickest time.
There is a permanent course at Wendover Woods with 20 checkpoints to find.
Explore Forestry Englands running trails and take the chance to escape stuffy gyms and get out into the fresh air – get fit where you can be inspired by stunning natural surroundings.
Walking trails at Wendover Woods
There are many miles of gravel roads, surfaced paths and tracks to explore with varied habitats.
Gruffalo Orienteering – fun family map reading challenge
Try out Forestry England’s fun, navigational challenge at Wendover Woods using a simple map to find twelve Gruffalo markers hidden in the deep, dark wood.
If you’re feeling competitive, choose to run, walk (or skip!) the course against the clock.
Before you begin the trail, pick up a Gruffalo orienteering leaflet with a certificate and map (Map available from Wendover Woods information point for £1.50.).
Horse riding at Wendover Woods – great riding in the Chiltern Hills
Wendover Woods offers some of the best riding in the Chilterns; with a network of well signed permissive bridle paths throughout the wood.
Horse riding is only permitted away from public bridleways with a valid day pass or membership. These can be purchased directly from the Chilterns Forest Office.

Nordic Walking at Wendover Woods
Nordic Walking is a full-body exercise that’s easy on the joints and suitable for all ages and fitness levels. It also has the added benefit of burning 20-40% more calories than normal walking!
This is a chance to put your technique into practice and meet other Nordic Walkers.
